We gathered at the youth center for our monthly parent meeting (last Friday of each month). Our friends from Gorditos Freshmex provided delicious tacos, chips and salsa > Hmmm so good!!!
We discussed topics such as the updated breakfast menu for the boys provided by Lazy Dog on the beach that includes a few more healthy choices i.e. yuca and mangu.. August 6 marks the much anticipated visit by Soles4Souls; boys to be fitted and will receive a new pair of shoes.. August 7 field trip to the international airport in Puerto Plata to give the boys a peak at air travel, where many tourists enter the country and more .. August 14 is final day of Summer Camp.. We return August 31..
One key agenda item was the pending change to the program’s schedule due to extended school hours being rolled-out by Ministry of Education. When the public school schedule changes we’ll shift operating hours to afternoons and Saturdays.
The headliners for the night were special guests, “Heidy” Cristina Delgado of Bohios de Quisqueya y Turismo and Tomas “Papo” Sone of Jiu Jitsu de la Costa.
Cristina Delgado is well studies in the area of tourism. She spoke of alternatives for economic development in the rural communities by providing tourists with an authentic look into Dominican life. She also discussed an upcoming project with FEDUJazz in which children can learn more about their culture and authentic dance. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Papo, who is well known and respected in Cabarete and other areas of the country, spoke about community, making healthy choices, discipline, respect for one another, and much more. He and his organization teach youth more than Jiu Jitsu. Side note: Papo is involved with “Clorofila” a great vegan spot in Callejon de la Loma (next to Voodoo) that offers menu items made with locally grown produce. Wow!! I never thought vegan could be so TASTY!!!
Cristina and Papo spoke with such passion and knowledge. We sincerely appreciate them joining us.. Until next time!!!
